That Hoarder: Overcome Compulsive Hoarding

Hoarding disorder is stigmatised and people who hoard feel vast amounts of shame. This podcast began life as an audio diary, an anonymous outlet for somebody with this weird condition. That Hoarder speaks about her experiences living with compulsive hoarding, she interviews therapists, academics, researchers, children of hoarders, professional organisers and influencers, and she shares insight and tips for others with the problem. Listened to by people who hoard as well as those who love them and those who work with them, Overcome Compulsive Hoarding with That Hoarder aims to shatter the stigma, share the truth and speak openly and honestly to improve lives.

#9 Panic, panic, panic

Friday May 14, 2021

I'm also full of panic about the absolute horror and shame I will feel when they are in here. My initial reaction to that the appointment was panic, panic, panic, and then I just froze.
I was paralysed for days, I knew what needed to be done, I didn't know how to do it.

If you're listening, and you're struggling with hoarding and you haven't got rid of 75% of your stuff already, then listen to me: “Don't get the pretty basket, don't get the shelving unit, and don't get the pretty bags. Not just yet, anyway. Hold out, as it is just more clutter”.For the full show notes and transcript for this episode, visit the website at Overcome Compulsive Hoarding. Thinking of compulsive hoarders, thinking of people whose homes are in quite a mess, then just saying, “I'm going to work on the bedroom” is just too big. It's too overwhelming. It's too difficult to do.For the full show notes and transcript for this episode, visit the website at Overcome Compulsive Hoarding. I can't tell you how dejected I feel right now. Because sorting out a few boxes in one room is one thing. It's better than not sorting out a few boxes in one room. But that's one room of several. And that's a few boxes out of a gazillion boxes.  For the full show notes and transcript for this episode, visit the website at Overcome Compulsive Hoarding. Programmes about hoarders exist so that viewers can look into the home of somebody who's struggling and laugh at them. And that's not okay. I was sceptical because the initial CBT sessions had been relatively useless. But equally, I had no other options. There aren't exactly hoarding treatments readily available. So I agreed to be referred on for this more in-depth therapy. For the full show notes and transcript for this episode, visit the website at Overcome Compulsive Hoarding. So, I hate the word hoarding. I hate the word hoarder. I resist saying them unless I absolutely have to. And this podcast and the website are kind of forcing me into getting used to those words, and I suspect that's a good thing. But they are difficult words. It's a very, very stigmatised thing.  Website: Overcome Compulsive HoardingTwitter: @ThatHoarderFacebook: Overcome Compulsive Hoarding with That HoarderSupport this projectSupport the show Hosted on Acast. So I guess the place to start really is how I got to where I'm at now. Where I'm at now is that I live in a hoarded house, surrounded by crap that I have a lot of mental blocks around getting rid of. I'm sick of how I live. But fixing it is so overwhelming that I don't know what to do.For the full show notes and transcript for this episode, visit the website at Overcome Compulsive Hoarding.
